The Jungfrau

Eiger North Face

Eiger North Face

The Jungfrau is a mountain near Interlaken, Switzerland which may be reached by a cog railway.  The views are spectacular and the price is equally breathtaking. These images were captured in the Summer of 2009 but have been processed at various times right up through January of 2013.

  1. Wonderful pics, Ron. That view from the top is spectacular, and I had to chuckle at the “dazed Japanese tourist.” :)

  8. Darn.. that reminds me I should go up there as well. Weird how we travel around the world and forget the beauty at home.

    • Thank you, but I have to say Houston isn’t quite as pretty as Switzerland by a long shot.

“Small people in the cold” really gives a sense of the vastness of the place, which I love. I’m also very fond of black and white work, and enjoy your images very much.

  15. Great photos bringing back many memories of summer holidays in Grindelwald with the family. I have been up the Jungfrau just once with the train and as you say breathtaking view and price, although we managed to have a family Bernese Overland ticket. My husband and I were quite taken with the area and read many books about the climbing of the eiger – our chalet was just opposite the view of the Eiger. Some sad stories but some great stories as well. I am not a mountain climber and neither is Mr. Swiss,, we just wear our walking boots and take a hike with the rucksack, but I think we had the routes mapped out in our heads to reach the summit, especially the spider part. The b/w photos show the character of the mountains best of all.

I have friends who BASE jump around there and takes lots of pictures. Nice to see some different views than just the exit points the jumpers use :-)

  27. These are so amazing! I’ve really been enjoying you’re pictures lately. I’m not sure if I like the people or the nature ones better . . .both.

  28. Such beautiful photos – I visited the Reichenbach Falls at the weekend via Grimselpass, was so close to Jungfrau but decided to make another trip of it – really glad I made that decision now, having seen these.

    August 20, 2014 at 2:28 pm

    • Thank you. I was lucky to go back then. Prices now are way too high.

      August 20, 2014 at 2:31 pm

      • It is the Swiss hallmark! I decided the funiculaire prices for the waterfalls were too steep so decided to make the climb on foot. Most exercise I’ve done all year…

        August 20, 2014 at 2:38 pm

        • I remember there was no free coffee in most of the hotels and going out for a cup was $5 and it has to be worse now. In Zagreb this spring a cup of coffee was about $1.40.

          August 20, 2014 at 2:42 pm

        • Free coffee in Switzerland? Impossible. I remember they were giving out free mulled wine at Christmas in Crans-Montana and I was convinced it must be poisoned! I’ve always wanted to go to Croatia though – and you’ve just given me another reason!
