Rome in Black and White

Vatican Spiral

Vatican Spiral

Rome was extremely crowded this trip.  Famous sights were not busy, they were packed.  I shoot places like Rome differently from other people.  In these crowds it isn’t possible to get a decent shot of any famous landmark. I try to look for architectural details and add in some candid street shots.  Vatican Spiral won a Picture of the Week award in a photography forum. All of these photos were updated recently.

Stunning! Especially Ponte Palatino. Of course I’m partial to B/W. To me colors often seem to distract from the impact of the basic subject. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love your other work, too. Over the last few weeks I’ve become a real fan. I’m happy I found you.

    • Thank you. I am a bit unusual in that I shoot both color and B&W and go back and forth regularly. There are situations where color distracts and others where color adds. It all depends.

OH these pictures bring back great memories of my time backpacking through Italy… especially the spiral staircase from the Vatican Museum.

  22. The Vatican spiral is a magnificent photo; no wonder it won an award.

  23. Very nice photos!

  24. Rome’s a great, if manic, city, and you’ve captured it perfectly without including any of the obvious shots! The Vatican helix always gets me though! :D

  25. The architectural details are fresh and interesting. I haven’t seen these shots taken before, I think. The tones are very good in your images. I enjoyed these very much.

  27. I realy like this Ron!

    September 30, 2013 at 10:35 am

    • Thank you. Look down the front page for the spiral staircase.

      September 30, 2013 at 10:37 am

      • That is the one I thought I was commenting on – it is truly lovely! :)

        September 30, 2013 at 10:40 am

        • There are two spirals, one in the vatican, one in a lighthouse. If you like one, you will like the other. The lighthouse is a couple of posts down the page. You were commenting on the Vatican, I believe.

          September 30, 2013 at 10:41 am

        • Perfect I will look again. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

          September 30, 2013 at 10:44 am

  28. Great, evocative shots. I like the fact that even when a place is rammed with people, it is still possible to capture a still, quiet moment. You have done this so well. I am having a black and white phase myself…this time of year the light is so lovely.

    September 30, 2013 at 11:35 am

    • I can’t say that is a phase thing with me, rather it is whether I try to shoot in B&W unless there is some exceptional color aspect to the subject or if I shoot in color unless there is some color problem with the subject. Many photographers stick to one or the other.

      September 30, 2013 at 11:48 am

  29. These are lovely! Hopefully I’ll be able to take some pretty decent shots on my Rome trip next year :D

    September 30, 2013 at 6:48 pm

    • Try to enjoy Rome first. If the pictures are good, that is a bonus. I really like Italian food, so anywhere in Italy is heaven for me.

  38. Rome is great – and so are your photos, Ron. I liked all of them and especially the candids. For some reason I have found that Rome (my modest try e.g. here: is one of the best places for a street photographer.
