Santa Fe in Black and White

Dog Wearing Sunglasses

Dog Wearing Sunglasses

Santa Fe is a ritzy town at a 7000 foot elevation surrounded by desert.  Population is only 68,000.  It’s the capitol of New Mexico too.  I wandered up to nearby Tesuque and further on to Abiquiu and the Ghost Ranch, an area that inspired many of Georgia O’keeffe’s paintings.  The food here is based on Mexican cuisine, but the red and green chile sauces are unique  to New Mexico.  Most buildings are adobe or a simulated adobe sometimes called Santa Fake.  Some structures date back to the 17th century.  There are also many art galleries.  Note the engine in the rail yard was painted for a Bond movie.  It actually belongs to Santa Fe Southern.

We spend time in Sante Fe every year. I appreciated your use of monochrome as it allowed me to see and appreciate forms and textures often lost in the vivid colors of the region. Well done!

  10. I grew up in New Mexico and miss a lot of things about it – including landscape and the food! Thank you for bringing back some great memories.

  11. Red or green? It’s the only question worth asking when it comes to our food. You might want to go to Tentrocks National Monument too. I’m moving come June, but I have to admit I love New Mexico. It’s near enough, since distance here is measured in something greater than one mile increments. I think it’s probably only 20 miles or so south of Santa Fe.

    • Red green or Christmas (both sauces). It is a truly unique American cusine, as distinct as New Orleans, but probably not as well recognized.
