My trip through Northern Michigan continues. Up here they make a big deal about being near the 45th parallel. It is halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, numerically. In the winter it probably feels like the North Pole, and in the summer, neither ever had it this good. While there the highs were in the low 70′s. Traverse City is a the South end of a bay between two peninsulas that jut North into lake Michigan. The Old Mission Peninsula to the East features the better wineries. To the West is funky shopping and little restaurants. I would have to guess these peninsulas were formed by receding glaciers. The name “traverse” comes from the water voyage between the tips of the two strips of land which the French called the grand traverse.

Great post! Indeed Michigan and the Great Lakes basins are all about glaciation. Glaciation and geology just fascinate me so much. Do some research on the glaciation of the Great Lakes, you’ll find it very interesting! Great photos too. The beach photo shows how low the water levels are these days. And surround states and entities want to pump water out for all manner of uses? No. Read what happened to the Aral Sea on Google.
There is a worldwide shortage of fresh water. That beach image is meant to be spiritual. Lost souls wandering around trying to be found.
beer for breakfast is great but ya gotta have brownies with it. Once again great series of shots.
Reblogged this on places-names [from a peripatetic point of view].
something solid…about these photos…heartland…with heart…
Thank you.
