Renaissance Festival Women in Chainmail

Chainmail Group

Chainmail Group

These were shot at the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville during the fall of 2008.  It was my first outing with a then brand new Nikon D300 DSLR.  One business there rents chainmail slave girl costumes to the fair attendees.  They participate in a parade around the fairgrounds.  Later many of the girls will dance on the second floor of the chainmail store.

Several of the dancers are regulars and appear in my photographs from the 2012 Texas Renaissance Festival. As the fall nears I look forward to this event, so I thought it was a good time to redo these photos from my archives.

Photographers Traci Matlock and Ashley MacLean appear in the group shot.  Notice the tattoos on several of the participants.

  2. :-) You know, I’ve played some online games (think World of Warcraft) and I always wondered how women could be safe in the kind of armor they wear (or have been assigned them in the games, rather. :-) The designers must have thought that women have skin as tough as chainmail except on the covered parts.

    • Thank you D Anna. I suppose one could call it a modern fantasy interpretation of 16th century garb.

    For you:
    This is a paperback book.
    Very pleasant, the title said:
    Head up particularly comforting.

  5. I really like the costumes! It certainly sounds like a good idea. At least you can be sure of what your slave really looks like…

    • Thank you. I did these in 2008 and did not get back there for 4 years. Most of the same participants were there. One had her 3 year old son with her.

  15. Wow. We went to the Texas Renaissance Festival every year when we lived there. I never saw these women. But I think the last time I was there was in 1992….

  16. I’ve lived in Texas all these decades and never been to a Renaissance Festival; how could I measure up to these ladies? Why do I see Princess Leia in chains near Jaba the Hut?

    August 25, 2013 at 7:29 pm

    • Why do you see her in Chains. You could measure up if you really want to.

      • Blissful Bohemian

Of course! That is the first thing that popped into my head was “chain gang”. They do like they are having a lot of fun- renaissance fairs are super fun. I am actually going to be working/photographing a Ren Fair in my town this weekend.
