Mauna Kea and Others

After a short stop at Rainbow Falls I headed for the Saddle Road to visit Mauna Kea. There is a visitor center about halfway up to the summit from the main road. The road surface then turns to gravel and is steep for 5 miles. My rented car barely made it because the minimum speed to produce enough power was also fast enough to overpower the suspension. The final 3 miles is very steep, but paved. The summit is at an oxygen starved 13,796 feet (4,200 Meters). The final photo is one of the spectacular views from my hotel room in Hilo.

Hawai’i nui, such an awesome place to spend time when it feels like time does not really exist. By the looks of your pics you most definitely got to experience the intensity and beauty of Pele.

  20. Absolutely stunning place, Ron :)

The landscape really looks alien in some images and in some others it’s like a paradise :)

  23. I’m acquainted with an astrophysicist who used to make annual summertime trips to the CFHT. Some of the early morning landscape shots he would make of those spectacular extinct calderas were incredible. The things that light can do, and the colours that manifest at that altitude, man-o-man!

    • It is a chore to get up there. The road is steep, bumpy and lacks traction. Then again, the experience is spectacular.
