Old Point Loma Lighthouse and Other Delights

Lighthouse Spiral Staircase

Lighthouse Spiral Staircase

Old Point Loma Lighthouse is located high on a hilltop offering dramatic views of San Diego.  In the interior of the building there are quarters.  The nearby shoreline is scenic (photographs tomorrow) making this area a must see item for visitors to San Diego.

    • Thank you, I had to run across the street to get that one.

      August 31, 2013 at 8:42 am

  3. Pretty well shots ! Love all the black and white while the rest are also stunning photos. Brilliant as always!

  4. Wow! These are some pretty decent shots. I love the staircase one as well as the marina and the hilltop view – they are incredible! Great job Ron!

  5. Loving that first shot!

    August 31, 2013 at 8:47 am

  6. I was there….many years ago….overlooking the ocean. A beautiful sight.
Didn’t go inside the lighthouse though.
    I can’t remember why.

    August 31, 2013 at 8:49 am

    • Thank you, it was a bit tight at the top of the stairs.

      August 31, 2013 at 8:58 am

  7. Love this series, Ron. Really spectacular!

    August 31, 2013 at 8:51 am

  8. Absolutely outstanding! In Michigan where I live there are about 115 lighthouses so we all get interested sooner or later. If you ever get back here you’d enjoy filming a Great Lakes lighthouse tour.

    August 31, 2013 at 8:53 am

    • Thank you Mary. There is a Michigan menu button in the header of my blog if you have time to look around.

      August 31, 2013 at 8:59 am

      • Your Michigan collection is grand. I live a half-hour from Ann Arbor and go often. I have a UM degree and have lived there off and on, but don’t know the graffiti alley. Where is it? I want to see it. PS If you (as I) think Mackinac Island is “tourist to the max” now, just wait. There is an awful plan afoot to tear down fudge shops and other old places to build major resort hotels. The tourism industry is determined to kill every ethnic and/or old-world place it can. Santa Fe where I lived 1985-90 is a sad example. Even then it was being “ravaged”. Walking along one day with a Chinese friend we were followed by a wizened Hispanic man shouting at us “Go back where you belong and leave us alone.”

        August 31, 2013 at 9:31 am

        • The graffiti alley is downtown somewhere. That plan for Mackinac is sick.

          August 31, 2013 at 9:36 am

        • Seriously? That’s disgusting! I am a native of Michigan, recently left for Nevada. This plan is disgusting and should be opposed by every resident of the state. The old cliche’ is true – money talks and (add bad word) walks.

          August 31, 2013 at 10:44 am

        • You are so right: Money talks! And it will probably make this happen. But I’m hoping for a “citizens’ movement” I can join to oppose it. This is just too awful. Thanks for you comment.

  9. Great (Edward) Weston-esque shot of the staircase.

    August 31, 2013 at 9:08 am

    August 31, 2013 at 9:41 am

  11. Ron, these are wonderful images. I particularly love the spiral staircase.

    August 31, 2013 at 10:12 am

  12. Beautiful work

    August 31, 2013 at 11:11 am

  13. I love lighthouses. They just seem to embody my favorite quote, “I wanted to be the knife as well as the wound.” I mean they are assaulted by the elements continually yet the light cuts right through to illuminate. Wonderful images.

    August 31, 2013 at 11:45 am

    • Thank you, unfortunately the lighthouse is disappearing from the shores of this world, replaced by GPS and other technical marvels.

      August 31, 2013 at 11:46 am

      • We have many very lovely ones here in Oregon. My favorite is Heceta Head. It is a historical site as are most of the lighthouses here. It is a B&B as well as event site…what a way to live! Sign me up.

  14. Beautiful photos! “Lighthouse Spiral Staircase” reminds me of the Fibonacci Sequence.
By the way, my aunts will be flying in from Japan to visit soon. I will add a stop at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse to their itinerary…I want to see it too! ;)

    • For high end dining try Bali Hai, but do not order meat.

      August 31, 2013 at 2:19 pm

      • Thanks for the tip! Did the meat make you sick?

        August 31, 2013 at 3:41 pm

        • No, the fish (especially the Ahi) is impressive and the meat dishes are plain. They have a super strong Mai Tai that is made without juice. Well, I am back in Houston now, and it is about 100F outside.

          August 31, 2013 at 3:53 pm

        • Sounds good! It hit 101F two days ago in Southern California.
It’s a good time to stay indoors with the A/C on. Stay cool!

          August 31, 2013 at 6:12 pm

        • You guys sure put things in perspective: I never thought I’d be grateful that it “only” got to 90 degrees!

          August 31, 2013 at 7:07 pm

        • After it gets dark, it gets down to only 90 degrees.

          August 31, 2013 at 8:20 pm

        • We were fortunate to have a relatively mild summer as far as temperatures go. But September is going to be unseasonably hot! :P

          September 1, 2013 at 3:54 pm

        • It was 101 F here Thursday evening with high humidity. The heat factor was over 110F.

          August 31, 2013 at 8:21 pm

  15. love the spiral staircase.

    August 31, 2013 at 3:08 pm

  18. Great perspective!!

B&W really brings out the twist of the staircase.

    September 11, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    • Thank you Richard. This post and the staircase image in particular have been very popular.

      September 11, 2013 at 7:35 pm

  31. Love the spiral staircase shot! It reminds me of a Nautilus shell. I really like the black and white shots!

    September 13, 2013 at 3:11 pm

  32. Beautiful, images, the b&w spiral, staircase is my fave! San Diego is a short drive for me….less than 6 hrs. Never been to Point Loma Lighthouse….now on my list!

    September 15, 2013 at 12:05 pm

  33. I love the MC Escher-esque staircase despite the fact it gives me a bit of vertigo! Maybe because it does…

    September 20, 2013 at 4:05 am

    • Thank you. The shot was uncomfortable to take. The ceiling was low, I am tall, the place was stuffy and there is always the chance of falling over the rail.

      September 20, 2013 at 6:39 am

  34. Thank you for liking “Sea Caves.” This is another gallery of fantastic photographs. As you already know, I like spiral staircases, and I also enjoyed the geometric design of “The Lighthouse Light.” The beautiful colors and lighting in “Marina at Night” and “Thunderheads on the Way Home” are a visual delight.

    September 21, 2013 at 2:03 pm

  35. Great shots! I need to go there.

    September 22, 2013 at 11:48 am

  36. Aren’t those Fresnal Lenses gorgeous! Nice capture, Ron!

    September 26, 2013 at 10:03 am

  37. Phenomenal set. I live in Cali — love the spiral staircase/lighthouse shot–a classic

  38. It’s amazing that we all have a set of eyes, but we each see such different things. I am always fascinated by the eye of the photographer, because they can capture so much beauty for us to see in a whole new light. Sad to say, most of us do miss a lot even though we have that very same set of eyes. We don’t see as much as we should. So, this is lovely – looking at your body of work, marveling at all the various pics. Thank you :)

      • Hi Ron,
Thank you so much for visiting my ‘side of the world’ as well. However, I noticed that you went over to my old blog which has not been in use since May 2013. I am still figuring out how to direct all visitors to my new blog. Sorry about that. I would love to properly welcome you at my new blog at http://shirleymaya.com/
Hope to see you there. Thank you again :)
