Red Bluff’s Birthday Party

Red Bluff is a white rabbit who is the beloved pet of dancer and event producer Y.E. Torres, AKA MS. Yet.  Ms. Yet is a belly dancer who became interested in visual arts and produced a series of works depicting amorphous looking characters in black and white.  This year she combined the works on paper in an installation  with dance and and others acting as the characters she created including the Bad Unicorn and the Evil Bunny Rabbit.  Ms. Yet is also known for the dramatic pterodactyl tattoos on her back.  This event celebrated Red Bluff’s birthday.

Yet’s Rabbits and Unicorns

This engaging performance installation was created by the collaboration of Lisa Chow and Ms. Yet (Y.E. Torres) in Houston.  When I arrived Lisa Chow greeted me and said, this is Yet’s world.  Indeed, for Yet, this was a dream come true.  It was lush space populated with fantasy characters, bad unicorns, bad rabbits, and real rabbits.  There are two other posts on my blog with the same actors and characters.  Yet is an accomplished  belly dancer.  Lisa Chow is an artist.  Jo Bird is a professional musician who plays the viola.  Jessie is Yet’s long time dance performance partner.  This performance took place in August, 2012.  Several of these photos received new post processing in December, 2012, mainly to correct white balance problems.  A few are new.

Sunday Afternoon Tea

What better time is there to have a tea than on a Sunday afternoon in the excessively warm summer weather of Houston, Texas.  This was a performance installation.  The visual art of the installation and the performances of many artists weere integrated and dependent upon each other, resulting in a very rich experience, both visually and emotionally.  This work was produced by the collaboration of  Lisa Chow and Ms. Yet.  Live rabbits and other performers rounded out the ensemble.  Delicious tea sandwiches, sweet tea vodka and sweets were served.

Vintage Swimwear Review, Galveston Beach

Brunette, Black Vintage Swimwear

Brunette, Black Vintage Swimwear

These photos are of contestants in the 2012 Galveston Beach Swimwear Review which was done on a vintage American swimwear style theme.  Many of the girls also wore vintage hair styles and makeup.  The styles ranged from a self constructed 1920′s swim dress (#38) to a 1960′s bikini (#45).  Think about it.  Sewing your own vintage swimsuit and modeling it before a crowd along with the hair and makeup.  These girls went all out.  None of the girls were introduced as professional models and only one out of the 50 contestants when introduced mentioned an interest in modeling.  However, I heard many are pin-up models and the organizers keep it quiet.  They all wore heels which are lovely, but not the best for walking on beach sand.  This shoot was not planned in any way.  I had gone down to Galveston to enjoy the weather and was driving down Seawall Blvd. when I heard the announcer.  I was lucky enough to find a parking spot and a place on the beach to shoot.

This set is more edgy than the last because all the girls have visible tattoos, some large and dramatic.  One candid street shot of bicyclists is there for good measure.

Twyla Shibari Suspension 2

Twyla Shibari Suspension 2

Shibari is the art of Japanese rope bondage.  The artistic aspect flows not only from the patterns of the rope and knots, but the overall result of the position of the model.  The entire process of binding the model (also called the sub or bottom) is a performance with the model often moved into different positions, suspended and sometimes inverted.  Alternatively, it is referred to as Kinbaku.

This Shiari performance was photographed at Mother Dog Studios.  It is a hive of artists studios and art gallery in the warehouse district North of Downtown Houston, just off Nance Street.  The cost was only $20 to get in with or without a camera.  These are some of the tamer images.  It was done in conjunction with a show of Shibari photographic prints.

Shiloh told me what I have seen written by other Shibari models.  She enjoyed the feel of the rope on her skin, and the differences between nylon and hemp.  She liked the feeling of being suspended.

Lisa performed nude, which is why you don’t see more of her images here.  The other girls wore lingerie.  One might notice they favor tattoos.  The Latina ran around in her panties all night, whether she was in bondage or not.  She was bound by three different riggers, one of which I think was her boyfriend.

“Shibari Suspension, Girl in Boots 1″ is one of my most pirated images.  It is all over Pinterest.

The Beauty Contest

Brunette in a Tee Shirt One

Brunette in a Tee Shirt One

This beauty contest was held at the Hooters Restaurant just off Kirby Drive in Houston, Texas during the spring of 2010.  Some people condemn this restaurant chain because of the skimpy uniforms the waitresses wear.  One should not be so quick because they hire young women with no prior restaurant experience and train them.  In this lousy economy, that is something positive.  Besides, what they wear is no worse than the cocktail waitresses in Vegas.  Originally these were published in color, but there were extreme white balance problems so they were converted to black in white.  In December 2012 the black and white conversions on these photos were redone to reflect my current standards.  The two color photos were shot at an event called “Barely Legal” which is held on the 21st of each month.
