Over the Independence Day weekend Reno holds the All-American Barbecue Festival in conjunction with the Firecracker 500 off road race.  A booth serving up very tasty BBQ was run by the Silver Legacy Hotel.  I highly recommend it if you are planning a stay in Reno.  The high plains of Northern Nevada are special, with lots of sunshine, moderate afternoon high temperatures, cool evenings and low humidity.  It was very nice in the afternoons when the sun slipped behind the Silver Legacy and Eldorado buildings.

Some of these were captured at  festival sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Houston and held in Hermann Park.  Much of the entertainment was paid for by the Japanese Consulate here in Houston. The remaining photos are from a small art festival held at Houston’s beautiful Elizabeth Baldwin Park.

Hermann Park Kite Festival

Giant Fish Kite

Giant Fish Kite

This inaugural kite festival was held in conjunction with Hermann Park’s centennial.  The giant fish kite does not fly well on its own, so it was assisted by the more efficient rainbow colored kite behind it.

Haute Wheels 2014

Cooking Demo

Cooking Demo

Start with a big parking lot, add a bunch of award winning food trucks, craft beer, Texas skies and you have Haute Wheels. This year’s festival added a small Via Colori to the mix. It was 86F and humid on this first weekend of Spring.

March Gallery Visits

Barbecue Chef

Afterglow was exhibited at Sicardi Gallery.  Gilbert Hsaio’s  show was at Gallery Sonja Roesch.  I bought a venison sausage sandwich from the chef outside of Hardy and Nance Street Studios and went inside to find a girl taking pictures with her mobile phone held high.

These were photographed at various Houston locations, but mostly along Dowling Street in the Third Ward.

Braes Bayou

Double Helix

Double Helix

In Houston a bayou is a glorified drainage ditch.  I live close to Braes Bayou and often use its hike and bike trail.  Sometimes I take my camera along and shoot while walking or bike riding.

People, Late Winter

Four Stylish Women

Four Stylish Women

Houston artist Ivete Lucas is pictured wearing colorful hose.  She and her husband constructed the tree sculpture which stands behind her, at Lawndale Center for the Arts.  Her friend Zahira is to her right and the other two girls were the most interestingly dressed ones I could round up for the shot.  Claudia is a friend and the shot is a set up.

Places Without Locations

Crossed Wires

Crossed Wires

Many photos are of recognizable places, like the Manhattan skyline. None of these landscapes are of instantly identifiable locations. The two aerials were photographed somewhere between Houston and LA, but I can’t tell you even what state is pictured. Remaining images are from Kauai, but without the Hawaii tag, nobody would ever know. [A fellow blogger who is also a pilot identified "Farmland II". See the comments.]

Houston 0214

Photographer in a Dress

Photographer in a Dress

Just a few photos I grabbed downtown and in Montrose while stuck here in Houston.  I asked a couple if I could take their picture and they immediately started kissing.  It was the day after Valentine’s day.  “Photographer in a Dress” won Picture of the Week at the highly competitive Nikon Gear photo forum.

Artists in Their Studios

Janavi Folmsbee

Janavi Folmsbee

I had the pleasure of speaking with Janavi in her studio.  She is also a scuba diver and we had an acquaintance in common in India.  Of this group, April Murphy is the only one that I have known for a while.  She appears with a work in progress.  Vincent Fink’s work is all about fantasy.  Paige does abstract floral paintings.  All of these artists were photographed at the Winter and Spring Street Studios Second Saturday open house.

High Seas at Hanalei Bay

Two Boys, Full Speed

Two Boys, Full Speed

On my last full day on Kauai I went up to Hanalei Bay to see the high seas.  Someone tried to go surfing.  Paramedics took him away in an ambulance.  Locals say it is possible to get swept off the dock by a rouge wave.

These were photographed on the Mahaulepu Trail, at various beaches or in the hills behind Kapaa.  I did eat every bite of the delicious Ronald Burger at Joe’s on the Green in Poipu.

Here are a few views on the way up and from the top of Wiamea Canyon. I was a bit disappointed when the clouds came rolling in, but managed to make the best of it.

Hanalei Bay was featured in the movie The Descendants.  It is the location of some of the most expensive beach homes in the world.

The Kuilau Trail is one of the easier ones on Kauai and offers stunning views of the area surrounding the Blue Hole.
