Saddle Road and Mauna Kea

This is one of the few ways to get away from the ocean.  Saddle road runs across Hawaii between the volcanic mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.  It is a rugged volcanic landscape.  At the peak of Mauna Kea there are several large research telescopes.  The visitor’s center that is partway up the mountain (9200 ft/2800 M) has a collection of smaller telescopes for public stargazing sessions.  Across from the visitor’s center is a short steep trail leading to a view of the valley below.

  2. I love the Saddle Road because with all the lava flows it is like being on the moon. I have never ventured up to the Mauna Kea telescopes, but I will next time I am there because your photos are enticing. Thank you! 🙂

  3. It’s an amazing place to visit – your photos have definitely brought back some really good memories! The trip to the peak may be a miserable drive, but it’s sure worth the effort, Ron! 😀

    • Like climbing Fuji, a person only has to do it once.

      • The thing I like about Big Island is that the sights will be different every time you go there. 🙂

        • That is true. About 18 months ago lava stopped flowing into the ocean.

        • Oh, I’d not realised that. When I was there in 2010, there had been a lava break out; to see it flowing overground was amazing!
